Local 24 News Political Analyst/Commentator Otis Sanford On School Vouchers In Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS … ARE BREAKING THEIR SILENCE AS THE SCHOOL VOUCHER BILL DEBATE … UNFOLDS IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE. THE HOT-BUTTON ISSUE … IS GETTING INTENSE AS MORE GROUPS COME OUT AGAINST THE PROPOSAL. LOCAL 24 POLITICAL ANALYST OTIS SANFORD EXPLAINS WHAT HE THINKS LAWMAKERS SHOULD DO.. HERE’S HIS POINT OF VIEW. DAYS, THE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM AND ALL SIX SUBURBAN DISTRICTS HAVE COME OUT AGAINST THE VOUCHER PROPOSAL BEING PUSHED BY GOVERNOR BILL LEE IN THE LEGISLATURE. MOST OF THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS HAVE PASSED RESOLUTIONS FORMALLY OPPOSING THE PLAN. AND SUPERINTENDENTS ALL SEEM TO BE IN LOCK STEP. THEY DON’T WANT PUBLIC DOLLARS TAKEN FROM THEIR DISTRICTS AND GIVEN TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS. PLUS, IT WOULD BE UNFAIR NOT TO HOLD PRIVATE SCHOOLS TO THE SAME ACCOUNTABILITY STANDARDS AS PLAN – WHICH HE CALLS EDUCATION SAVINGS ACCOUNTS – HIS SIGNATURE INITIATIVE IN HIS FIRST YEAR IN OFFICE. UNDER THE PLAN, STUDENTS ATTENDING LOW PERFORMING SCHOOLS WOULD RECEIVE $73 HUNDRED DOLLARS TO ATTEND A PRIVATE SCHOOL. THE GOVERNOR IS PROMISING TO MAKE GOOD ON ANY MONEY THAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS WOULD LOSE. BUT HIS PROPOSAL DOES NOT ADDRESS THE ACCOUNTABILITY ISSUE. AND WHILE NO SUBURBAN SCHOOL IN SHELBY COUNTY IS ON CONCERNS, I BELIEVE THE PLAN SHOULD BE PUT ON HOLD – AND STUDIED FURTHER. BECAUSE IT CLEARLY IS NOT READY – FOR PRIME TIME. AND THAT’S MY POINT OF VIEW. I’M OTIS SANFORD, FOR LOCAL 24 NEWS.
